Filling the Gaps When Things Get Slow

When Things Slow Down — Make It Count
As someone who’s used to — and genuinely enjoys — running at full capacity most of the time, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself when things slowed down.
But soon, I realized this extra time is a rare gift — and a short-lived one. So instead of letting it slip away, I decided to use it to fine-tune things here at headquarters.
If you’re in the same boat, here are a few ideas to make your downtime productive:

  1. Look at your business from the outside in. Listen to your voicemail message — does it sound friendly and clear? Check your email signature — is your phone number listed? When was the last time you read your website’s homepage or subscribed to your own newsletter?
  2. Spruce up your LinkedIn profile. Update your headshot if it’s outdated, refresh your About section, and finally ask for those recommendations you’ve been meaning to request.
  3. Repurpose old content. If past newsletters never made it to your website, now’s the time to upload them and give them new life.
  4. Eliminate daily frustrations. Think of all those tiny irritations you keep tolerating — missing client info, misplaced supplies, that paper pile you’ve stopped seeing. Handle them now and free up mental space.
  5. Clear your desk. Empty everything off (yes, everything), clean thoroughly, and only return what you truly need or love.
  6. Review your finances. Don’t wait until tax season — bring your records up to date while things are calm.
  7. Plan your next big project. Whether it’s a new offering, system, or marketing idea, sketch out the first steps and get the ball rolling.

For those of us who thrive on full schedules, a sudden lull can feel strange. So yes — take time to rest. But once you’ve recharged, use the quiet to strengthen your foundation and set yourself up for what’s next.
